Avoid fake LinkedIn profiles and how to identify them quickly

By | Digital Marketing, Uncategorized

Building your LinkedIn network is critical for your current and long term personal strategy.

Many of us just simply connect to anyone and everyone on LinkedIn without reviewing the profile first. It takes less than 60 seconds to determine if the connection is a good fit for your personal strategy or not. Don’t dilute your network (circle of influence) with people that are not real or have no interest in a growing business relationship.

Here is what to look for:

  1. No photo or photo looks like something grabbed of off google images or shutterstock. Tip: When in doubt right click on their photo and run “search for google image.”

google search image

  1. Only 1 job listed, multiple overlapping jobs or no descriptions under each job
  2. Title is self-employed but list themselves as an Assistant Manager. My friend, Jennifer McClure, was kind enough to screen capture this example. Matthew Dooley pointed out that as a self-employer she never promoted herself in 4 years. Good one Matthew.

linkedin fake profile

  1. Lots of connections but you share zero to very little mutual connections with them
  2. Poorly written or broken English on the invite or profile. Who talks like this? No, I didn’t add this person to my LinkedIn.

fake_profile_001

  1. No endorsements. Can’t be endorsed when no one has worked with you before.
  2. If you are a real person and you have some of these items missing, please update immediately or we will think that you are not real. (“I’m a real boy” in my Pinocchio voice)

Don’t dilute your valuable LinkedIn network with these bad connections.

Your turn: what would you add to the list of identifying fake profiles quickly?

By | Events, Uncategorized

I am honored to be selected as a mentor for the Bizwomen Mentoring Monday. Join me and the Cincinnati Business Courier on April 4th for this one-of-a-kind event that brings women together in a casual, fast-paced coaching atmosphere.

The event will take place in 43 Business Journal markets on the same day. This means at least 200+ women will be coached in every market or 10,000 women across America, from Albany to Hawaii.

The event will offer the opportunity to choose from 40 mentors who are the most influential women in the business community for one-on-one coaching sessions for seven minute conversations. The attendees will stand in line and wait for a particular mentor or move to the next mentor available. This will allow the attendees to network with each other while they are waiting, which is just as important as the coaching sessions. We expect every attendee to have the opportunity to meet between one and seven mentors. The quick turnaround is organized chaos which will be fast, fun and fulfilling as everyone gets the chance to meet new people and gain new insights.
